Camden Market

Camden Market

$58.94

The Camden Markets are a number of adjoining large markets in Camden Town near the Hampstead Road Lock of the Regents Canal, often called collectively Camden Market or Camden Lock. The stalls sell crafts, clothing, bricabrac, fast food, and other things. It is the fourth most popular visitor attraction in London, attracting approximately 100,000 people each weekend. A small local food market has operated in Inverness Street since the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1974 a weekly crafts market held every Sunday near Camden Lock was started; a large complex of markets grew from this small beginning. The markets have a mixture of temporary stalls and fixed premises. The markets originally operated on Sundays; this is still the main day, with much activity on Saturdays, but an increasing number of traders, mainly in fixed premises, operate throughout the week. Camden and Rockport

Camden and Rockport

$21.39

As we approach the end of a century, this new book looks back at over one hundred years of Camden’s and Rockport’s history, with photographs of the people, places, and events which have defined the proud and vibrant communities we know so well today. Author and local resident Barbara Dyer has collected over two hundred old photographs and postcards of Camden, Rockport, and the surrounding area which range from the late 1800s to the 1950s. These delightful images show buildings long gone and others which are still familiar features of the local landscape; they bring to life events both catastrophic and celebratory from the fascinating history of these beautiful coastal communities. Most of all, the photographs introduce us to the ordinary folk who lived, loved, worked, and had fun in these tight-knit towns: fishermen, sailors, store owners, teachers, schoolchildren, and hundreds of others whose lives are such an integral part of the story of Camden and Rockport.

Battle of Camden

Battle of Camden

The Battle of Camden was a major victory for the British in the Southern theater of the American Revolutionary War. On August 16, 1780, British forces under Lieutenant General Charles, Lord Cornwallis routed the American forces of Major General Horatio Gates about 10 km north of Camden, South Carolina, strengthening the British hold on the Carolinas following the capture of Charleston. Following the British defeat at Saratoga in 1777 and French entry into the American Revolutionary War in early 1778, the British decided to renew a southern strategy to win back their rebellious North American colonies. This campaign began in December 1778 with the capture of Savannah, Georgia, and gained further ground in January 1780, when General Sir Henry Clinton led an army and captured Charleston, South Carolina. Clinton returned to New York, leaving Lord Cornwallis the task of fortifying the South and raising the anticipated large numbers of Loyalists. The Continental Army in the south, most of which had surrendered at Charleston, was completely driven from South Carolina in the May 1780 Battle of Waxhaws. The city was incorporated in 1784 and soon became a center for the manufacture of cast-iron products, clothing, and footwear. In 1726, Benjamin Franklin printed the first Colonial money in Burlington, and the state’s first constitution was signed here in July 1776. Home of the Game: The Story of Camden Yards

Home of the Game: The Story of Camden Yards

$24.95

The celebrated home ballpark of the Baltimore Orioles, Camden Yards has become baseball’s center stage, the main theater where many of the game’s successes and woes have played out in recent years. Home of the Game celebrates the unique position Camden Yards holds as a symbol of the modern game and a prototype for new ballparks across the country. In his direct, engaging account, Thom Loverro examines the history of the park, its influence on the move to bring baseball back from the suburbs to the cities, and its far-reaching social and business impact on professional sports.Combining old-fashioned architecture with modern convenience, Camden Yards represents the new trend in sports facilities that has touched not just baseball but all of professional sports: the ballpark as revenue producer. Despite Baltimore’s relatively small population, the Orioles now sell out every game, which has allowed them to spend liberally on the acquisition of top-tier free agents. Such recruitment has resulted in a consistently competitive team that represents both the best, such as the retention of hometown hero Cal Ripken, and worst, such as the succession of talented managers driven off by owner Peter Angelos, in contemporary baseball.Home of the Game reveals how this revolutionary ballpark has changed the face of baseball as a sport and a business.

 Regent's Park and Primrose Hill

Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill

$29.95

It is London’’s good fortune to have five royal parks near its center — green oases in the middle of a bustling city. Of these five, the newest is Regent’’s Park, created in the early 19th century as part of the greatest exercise in town planning in British history. The land was part of the property of Barking Abbey during the Middle Ages and became property of the Crown since it was appropriated by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Partly in the City of Westminster and partly in the London Borough of Camden, its 487 acres include grassland, woodland, wetland, three superb gardens, the elegant terraces devised by John Nash, the Open Air Theatre, and the London Zoo. The park is home to a remarkable range of animal and bird life and is used by millions of Londoners and visitors. In this book, superb photography brings to life the elegant prose tracing the park’’s history, its architecture, and its life.

 The Rules of Attraction

The Rules of Attraction

$15

Set at a small, affluent liberal-arts college in New England at the height of the Reagan 80s, The Rules of Attraction is a startlingly funny, kaleidoscopic novel about three students with no plans for the future–or even the present–who become entangled in a curious romantic triangle. Bret Easton Ellis trains his incisive gaze on the kids at self-consciously bohemian Camden College and treats their sexual posturings and agonies with a mixture of acrid hilarity and compassion while exposing the moral vacuum at the center of their lives. Lauren changes boyfriends every time she changes majors and still pines for Victor who split for Europe months ago and she might or might not be writing anonymous love letter to ambivalent, hard-drinking Sean, a hopeless romantic who only has eyes for Lauren, even if he ends up in bed with half the campus, and Paul, Lauren’s ex, forthrightly bisexual and whose passion masks a shrewd pragmatism. They waste time getting wasted, race from Thirsty Thursday Happy Hours to Dressed To Get Screwed parties to drinks at The Edge of the World or The Graveyard. The Rules of Attraction is a poignant, hilarious take on the death of romance.
