Side Story
Can anyone tell me a little more about Teresita from West Side Story?

My school is doing West Side Story and I got the role of Teresita. I don’t really know who she is apart from that she is in the Shark gang.

Do I sing any songs?

Will I have any lines?

And how does she contribute to the production as a whole?

Thank you for any help in advance! :)

The answers to all your questions (and many more that you haven’t yet thought to ask) are all contained in the script. Check it out.

"Louis Auchincloss has an enveloping story to tell and a perfect, understated knowledge of those who inhabit it," said the New York Times of The Scarlet Letters. The same can be said of Auchincloss’s new novel, a tour de force that charts the rise of one uncommon family in America’s grand city. How did the families who live on Manhattan’s Upper East Side get to where they are today? As much a penetrating social history as it is engaging fiction, East Side Story tells of the Carnochans, a family whose Scottish forebears establish themselves in New York’s textile business during the Civil War. From there they quickly move on to seize prominent positions in the country’s top schools and Manhattan’s elite firms. As the novel unfolds, family members across the generations recount their stories, illuminating lives steeped in both good fortune and moral jeopardy. From women who outsmart their foolish husbands, to ambitious lawyers who protect the Carnochan name, to the family’s artists and writers, all weigh the question that infuses so much of Auchincloss’s fiction: what makes for a meaningful life in a family that has so much? In its starred review, Kirkus Reviews hails Auchincloss for being "once again the master of his craft." East Side Story is both a loving and wicked look at New York’s own as only this sublime master of manners can provide.

My Side of the Story

My Side of the Story

$12.53

Have you ever felt alone, like no one loved or appreciated you? Have you ever given someone your heart only to find that they really wasnt deserving of it? Have you ever loved and never received it in return, but didnt realize it until it was too late? Have you ever heard people talk about you, discussing things that they heard and believing them, without hearing your side? Have you ever smiled because life was better than what people told you and you had faith that you could be anything possible? The newest collection of poetry entitled, My Side of The Story, focuses on the thoughts, feelings, emotions, life’s obstacles, racial inequality, and heartbreak, in which women often leave untold. As Women, we are told to be strong because that is our nature, Don’t Stop at Adversity because we have the strength to overcome mountains. We can never give up no matter what, because we carry the nations on our shoulders. These poetic stories, written by Charron Monaye, are the thoughts of many women finally having the voice to speak out, including her own, allowing others to know how it feels to be hurt, abused, taking advantage of, loved, cared for, appreciated, or in enraged.

A high-powered literary agent with a Jessica Rabbit body, Jojo Harvey’s brilliant mind should be focused on her million-dollar book deals and her climb up the corporate ladder — and not on her love affair with her married boss. Jojo’s client, bestselling author Lily Wright, can’t seem to deliver her long-awaited second novel — bad karma, perhaps, for stealing the beloved of her ex-best friend, event planner extraordinaire Gemma Hogan. While Gemma has her own problems, specifically a flatlining social life and a newly separated (and desperately needy) mom — a situation she’s lately been chronicling in a series of hilarious e-mails that has come to the attention of Jojo Harvey … who thinks there just might be a potential bestseller in all this. There are three sides to every story, and when what goes around starts to come around in the lives of these three suddenly intertwined women, they’ll see that revenge sometimes has plans of its own …

100 Americans Making Constitutional History: A Biographical History

$280.65

100 Americans Making Constitutional History: A Biographical History presents 100 profiles of the key people behind some of the most important U.S. Supreme Court cases. Edited by Melvin I. Urofsky, a respected constitutional historian, each 2,000-word profile delves into the social and political content behind landmark Court decisions. For example, while a case like Brown v. Board of Education is about an important idea–the equal protection of the law–at its heart it is the story of a little girl, Linda Brown, who wanted to go to a decent school near her home. The outcome is accessible and objective stories about the individuals–heroes and scoundrels–who fought their way to constitutional history. 100 American Making Constitutional History helps students understand the human side of the Supreme Court’s decisions from the early republic to the present. Each biographical profile, written by a constitutional scholar or legal analyst, includes a discussion about the Court decision and how the specific legal issues evolved into great constitutional questions and drama. It puts a face and history to major cases by reminding the reader that there are people behind them, seeking vindication of their individual liberties and civil rights.

 1949, The First Israelis

1949, The First Israelis

$21

The founding of Israel in 1948–one of the seminal events of the century–offers a heroic narrative with few parallels in modern history. In 1949, a controversial best-seller in Israel, Tom Segev draws on thousands of declassified documents along with personal diaries and correspondence to reconstruct the unvarnished story of Israel’’s first year. Segev reveals the lofty aspirations that guided the state’’s leaders as well as the darker side of the Zionist utopia: the friction between the early settlers and the immigrants, the lack of good-faith negotiations with the Arabs; the clash between religious and secular factions; the daily collision of the Zionist myth with the severe realities of life in the new state. Unflinching in its observations, this bold chronicle is indispensible for understanding the dilemmas that continue to confront–and divide–Israeli society.

Faldo’s team, a blend of experience and youth, seemed more than match for an American side that contained six rookies. But the Ryder Cup is MatchPlay, head to head competition against a backdrop of highly patriotic support. At a Pep rally held earlier in the week Azinger recruited the US fans as his team’s 13th man. Would it work? The answer, emphatically, was yes, and in dramatic fashion! The Official Film tells the blow by blow story of one of the truly great Ryder Cup encounters as, over three days of breathtaking golf, ‘Zinger’s heroes regain Samuel Ryder’s trophy. It may not be obvious why someone like myself would write my memoir. I am not a famous person. I am not a professional athlete. I am not a politician. I am not even known in my local area of North Carolina. I do not fit into any of these typical categories of autobiographical writers. However, as in most people, I have a story to tell that is unique from many and common to some. We all have stories that people can relate to and sympathize with, if only we just tell them. I find a great relief when I learn that others have survived similar struggles that I am going through. A Powerful Account of Struggle and Survival at SeaThe lure of paradise was unmistakable, and Bill Butler was on a quest to find it with his wife Simonne–riding the Pacific currents on their sloop Siboney, with a world of possibilities ahead. But, twelve hundred miles from land, the alluring ocean showed its deadly side when, without warning, a pod of pilot whales attacked their sailboat, battering it until it sank beneath the waves. The dazed couple was left drifting in midocean in a leaky six-foot raft meant for coastal waters, with only a few hastily grabbed provisions to sustain them. Simonne, who had never truly shared Bill’s dream of circumnavigating the globe, blamed him bitterly for their desperate plight. In this powerful account of their 66-day odyssey, Butler tells a gritty, harrowing tale of their battles against nature, despair, and their own demons. He reveals how he and Simonne found the strength to survive despite the ravages of hunger, storms, and sharks. Based on Butler’s faithful log entries, 66 Days Adrift is both a chilling cautionary tale for sailors with big ideas and an inspiring story of love, faith, and survival against long odds. How a lifetime dream to sail around the world becomes a fight to survive. — Yachting A vivid account of the complete will to live. — The San Juan StarWilliam Butler learned to sail by the age of nine. When he retired in 1989, he had logged more than 34,000 blue-water miles; his total now exceeds 74,000 miles. 8 Men and a Duck

8 Men and a Duck

$13

Even with the wind on our side and all eight of us pulling, we had never yet managed to change the complex sails….Now we had to pull against the full force of the wind, in a storm, in the middle of the night…. So begins Nick Thorpe’s unlikely journey to sail 2,500 miles from northern Chile to Easter Island on the Viracocha — a boat made of reeds. Captain Phil Buck’s desire to test the waters in this pre-Incan boat was twofold: to reopen the controversial migration theories of Thor Heyerdahl, who sailed his boat the Kon-Tiki from Peru to Polynesia in 1947, and to have one heck of a time in the process. With a crew that includes a tree surgeon, a jewelry salesman, and two ducks, Thorpe embarks on an unnerving Pacific voyage that is by turns fierce and farce: from the bungled phone call that triggered a naval rescue alert to the constant race against the inexorable sinking of the soggy hull. A story of high tides and even higher stakes, 8 Men and a Duck is a tale of friendship, fate, and the unlikely distances people will travel for true adventure.

$34.55

Though the modern bus has long since replaced the streetcar in New Orleans, Desire is still the meanest street of them all. Now Police Detective Skip Langdon finds herself on its shady side in what at first appears to be a small case with some big names–Councilwoman Bebe Fortier has misplaced her equally prominent husband. Yet Skip soon senses something big starting to unfold. Something rooted in corruption, resulting in violence–and motivated by that old demon . . . desire. Across town, Talba Wallis has a simple desire of her own–to find out what Russell Fortier’s disappearance has to do with her. Wallis is a woman who leads three lives–poet, computer expert, and part-time detective once hired to spy on Fortier. But the private investigator she worked for can’t help her out. He’s lying in his office with a bullet in his chest. Reporter Jane Storey is also walking down that mean, sultry street–she’s on the brink of the biggest story of her life. But she’s got a bad feeling she’s being played like a deck of cards. In fact, all three investigators–cop, private eye, and reporter–sense an unknown (and malevolent) presence pulling strings they cannot see. Smith’s steamy masterpiece is a tale of desire running out of control . . . of corporate greed, a lust for power, and a legacy of misery that only now must be set right–at a cost measured in blood and heartbreak and lives. From the Hardcover edition.

 A Detective at Death's Door: A Mystery

A Detective at Death’s Door: A Mystery

$4.38

If Detective Harriet Martens’s husband John hadn’t been reading an Agatha Christie classic while the detective herself was sunning by the side of the club pool, she would have been dead before this story began. Unbeknownst to either of them, a killer had dropped a highly lethal addition into Harriet’s cold drink. Struck by surprise to see the very symptoms of poisoning he’d been reading about, John was able to act—immediately! Although he acted in time to save Harriet’s life, she did not escape from the poisoning unscathed. She was bed-ridden for much too long a time before she was well enough to join in the search for her would-be murderer. But being imprisoned in bed gives one plenty of time to think, and Harriet soon realized that the attempt on her life was the initial move by an unknown who would soon earn the title of serial killer. Even after there had been more murders, Harriet found it hard to convince her colleagues of this. They argued that the victims were too unrelated to each other; they did not know one another, had very different occupations, were widely apart socially and economically, and lived in neighborhoods scattered about the environs of the town. Except for the fact that they were English citizens, they had nothing in common. Or—correction! They had nothing in common that Harriet’s fellow police officers could see. But no one can say that Harriet is not tenacious. Once she is able to go about in person, if a bit shakily, she comes up with some helpful ideas. All the while, in the back of her mind, she knows that the killer, ego bruised, must be aching to finish what he or she started.

A Disease Apart: Leprosy in the Modern World

A Disease Apart: Leprosy in the Modern World

$1.99

This fascinating cultural and medical history of leprosy enriches our understanding of a still-feared biblical disease. It is a condition shrouded for centuries in mystery, legend, and religious fanaticism. Societies the world over have vilified its sufferers: by the sheer accident of mycobacterial infection, they have been condemned to exile and imprisonment–illness itself considered evidence of moral taint. Over the last 200 years, the story of leprosy has witnessed dramatic reversals in terms of both scientific theory and public opinion. In A DISEASE APART, Tony Gould traces the history of this compelling period through the lives of individual men and women: intrepid doctors, researchers, and missionaries, and a vast spectrum of patients. We meet such pioneers of treatment as the Norwegian microbe hunter, Armauer Hansen. Though Hansen discovered the leprosy bacillus in l873, the ‘heredity vs. contagion’ debate raged on for decades. Meanwhile, across the world, Belgian Catholic missionary Father Damien became an international celebrity tending to his stricken flock at the Hawaiian settlement of Molokai. He contracted the disease himself. To the British, leprosy posed an imperial danger to their sprawling colonial system. In the l920s Sir Leonard Rogers of the Indian Medical Service found that the ancient Hindu treatment of chaulmoogra oil could be used in an injectable form. The Cajun bayou saw the inspiring rise of leprosy’s most zealous campaigner of all: a patient. At Carville, Louisiana, a Jewish Texan pharmacist named Stanley Stein was transformed by leprosy into an eloquent editor and writer. He ultimately became a thorn in the side of the U.S. Public HeathDepartment and a close friend of Tallulah Bankhead. The personalities met on this journey are remarkable and their stories unfold against the backgrounds of Norway, Hawaii, the Philippines, Japan, South Africa, Canada, Nigeria, Nepal and Louisiana. Although since the l950s drugs trea

 A Dollar the Hard Way

A Dollar the Hard Way

$24.95

A Dollar the Hard Way is a series of stories about the life of a young man growing up and entering adulthood in Southern Illinois during the 1930s and ’40s. The book is a gem. Whether he is digging for oil, or searching his soul, Kestner Wallace makes real his early life in the rural Midwest. Each story evokes a time and place gone by, with vividly drawn characters described by a man who is clearly a character in his own right. Whether from the viewpoint of a poor Southern Illinois farm boy, a World War II veteran, a fisherman, or an educator for 42 years starting with one-room schoolhouse days, his stories are notable for both their charming ability to show the lighter side of hard times, as well as their intimate details of historical interest. Wallace’s stories have delighted Springhouse Magazine readers for over twenty years, For the first time, the full collection is available in one entertaining volume.

 A Great Civil War

A Great Civil War

$7.11

A Great Civil War is a substantial new interpretation of the events which continue to dominate the American imagination and identity nearly 150 years after the war’s end. In personal as well as historical terms, even more than the war for independence, the Civil War has been the defining experience of American democracy. A lifelong student of military strategy and tactics, Russell F. Weigley brings to his account a deep understanding of the importance of individuals from generals to captains to privates. He puts the reader, as well as anyone who has written about war, on the battlefield. All the important engagements are covered: Fort Sumter, the early clashes in the West and border states, the naval encounters in the East, and the great and horrible battles whose names resound in American history — Shiloh, Corinth, Bull Run, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, Antietam, Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Appomattox. A brilliant narrator of battle action and historical events, Weigley is never content merely to tell a good story. Every student of war will find new insights and interpretations at the strategic and the tactical level. A Great Civil War also analyzes the politics of each side in relationship to battlefield situations and makes firm judgments about the leaders on both sides of the conflict. Weigley is unique in his ability to put all the pieces on the board at once; the reader understands as never before how war and politics (and individuals) interacted in this infinitely complex story.

A Great Russia: Russia and the Triple Entente, 1905 to 1914

A Great Russia: Russia and the Triple Entente, 1905 to 1914

$106.4

The Triple Entente of Great Britain, Russia, and France was the foreign policy prong of the Russian imperial government’s reaction to the disastrous events of 1905, including the revolution and the near defeat in the Russo-Japanese War. This alignment with the two western, liberal powers was almost universally perceived within official Russian governing circles as a necessary, if ideologically distasteful, diplomatic relationship to offset the growing German threat on the continent. Maintaining the entente would help Russia retain its great power status. For the first time, Tomaszewski tells the official Russian side of the story, long inaccessible due to restrictions imposed by the relevant Russian archives during the Soviet era. In doing so, she sheds new light on the international scene as the crisis of World War One approached.

 A Passionate Engagement

A Passionate Engagement

$18

A Passionate Engagement is both a love story and a story of political activism. In this remarkable memoir, Ken Harvey (award-winning author of If You Were With Me Everything Would Be All Right) reveals his own experience of coming out as a gay man, of meeting and falling in love with the man who would become his husband, and of growing into a social and political activist. Much of the story is filled with the kind of sensitive writing that Harvey demonstrated in his earlier work, but this book also shows a different side as he moves from the fictional to non-fictional, as he puts himself bluntly in the middle of the conflict. As the book progresses, the reader moves with Harvey from outside observer to inside participant of the political struggle for same-sex marriage. His shift is significant, and a reader can”t help but be moved along with him. This is a timely and important book, one that puts a truly human face onto this important social movement.

A Rainbow Over the River: Experiences of Life, Death, and Other Worlds

$40.95

For many years Veronika van Duin has been able to see over the river experiencing spiritual dimensions and worlds hidden to the physical eye. With clairvoyant vision she has perceived angels and demonic beings, people who have died, and even events taking place in other parts of the world. But in 2002, with the passing of her mother Barbara Lipsker, the author’s spiritual journeys became more concentrated and frequent, and she began to see people who had recently crossed the threshold of death, including the victims of an airplane disaster and a suicide bombing. In A Rainbow Over the River, the author tells her remarkable story, from her earliest glimpses of the other side to her most recent excursions over the river. In the second part of the book, she records an intensely moving diary of her mother’s passing, rich in love, care, and profound understanding of suffering. She describes how, despite the sadness of losing their mother, Veronika’s family see the death as a transition to a new existence and, ultimately, as a great festival of life. In the third section of the book she speaks of her mother’s life as a pioneer of Camphill, a social movement that provides home and work for people with special needs. She also offers thoughts on birth and death, grief, healing, prayer, and the meaning of existence. A Rainbow Over the River is a glorious celebration of life, illumined through a knowledge of death and the eternal nature of spirit.

 A Street Called Darwin

A Street Called Darwin

$15.95

A Street Called Darwin is based on a real individual: Charles Darwin Foard. This man grew up in southwestern Wisconsin, was drafted into the United States Army in 1941. He applied for and was accepted into the Army Air Corps, the forerunner of the present day United States Air Force. Darwin trained in Texas, learning how to fly a B-24 bomber. His first assignments were long-range bombing missions in the South Pacific against Japanese-held installations. He was killed in a tragic runway crash on Biak Island in 1944. While this book is about the military life of this remarkable young man, it also reveals his very human side as he interacts with family and acquaintances. The basis for this biography of Darwin is a collection of letters, photos and documents which were kept by his parents and relatives. The author came into their possession in 2007 and quickly discovered that there was a story that just had to be told.

 A Wolf at the Table

A Wolf at the Table

$3.93

The author of Running with Scissors delves into new territory with his most personal and unexpected memoir yet. A Wolf at the Table is the story of Burroughs’ relationship with his father, his stunning psychological cruelty, and the redemptive power of hope. Millions of listeners have been flat-out astonished, profoundly moved, and massively entertained by the writing of Augusten Burroughs. Now, with A Wolf At The Table-his first full-length memoir in five years-Augusten returns to his literary roots as one of the most famous memoirists of our time, yet he makes a quantum leap forward into untapped emotional terrain: the radical pendulum swing between love and hate, the unspeakably terrifying relationship between father and son. A Wolf At The Table is the story of Augusten’s relationship with his father, John Robison, Sr., a man only briefly touched upon in Running With Scissors. Told with shocking honesty and penetrating insight, A Wolf At The Table is more than the companion volume to Running with Scissors-it’s a story of stunning psychological cruelty and the redemptive power of hope. From The Critics: Memoir about the bestselling autobiographer’s father manages flashes of insight but turns into yet another baroque chronicle of Burroughs’s damaged childhood (Possible Side Effects, 2006, etc.). In a dramatic early scene, his father explodes: ‘Goddamn you,’ he spit in my face. ‘Just this barrage of incessant talking on and on and on you cannot simply dominate a room and the thoughts and attentions of every person in that room simply because you are in it.’ It’s a completely disproportionate response to some routine toddler nagging, and the brutal spanking that accompanies it is a precursor of more abuse to come. Those familiar with Burroughs’s particularly gothic familial mythos (previously focused on adolescence and early adulthood) will recognize his mother in her several manic, pill-popping appearances here. Instead of Sven

 Abraham Lincoln's Humorous Stories

Abraham Lincoln’s Humorous Stories

$19.95

Nothing that can be written about Lincoln can show his character in such a true light as the yarns and stories he was so fond of telling, and at which he would laugh as heartily as anyone. For a man whose life was so full of great responsibilities, Lincoln had many hours of laughter when the humorous, fun-loving side of his great nature asserted itself. While nearly all of Lincoln’s stories have a humorous side, they also contain a moral, which every good story should have. They contain lessons that could be taught so well in no other way. Every one of them is a sermon. Lincoln, like the Man of Galilee, spoke to the people in parables. The parables, yarns, stories, anecdotes and sayings of the Immortal Abe deserve a place beside Aesop’s Fables, Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress and all other books that have added to the happiness and wisdom of mankind. Lincoln’s stories are like Lincoln himself. The more we know of them the better we like them.

 Access, Opportunity, And Success

Access, Opportunity, And Success

$41.24

Behind the hallowed walls of higher education are students who did not grow up expecting to attend college, students who walked through open doors not knowing what to expect on the other side. For some, these open doors became revolving doors, and they simply gave up. For many others, however, there were unexpected successes, successes that included more than academic accomplishments. These people came through the system with an increased sense of self-confidence that empowered them in the world beyond college. This oral history tells the story of the struggles as well as of the triumphs related to the fight for access and high quality in higher education. Thus, it provides a unique look at the past state of higher education, and at the measures that might be taken to improve our future educational system. The book begins with a brief historical overview of what access to higher education looked like before the 20th century. Following chapters tell the actual stories and are organized around four themes: the power of belief in students; access with success; institutional commitment; and effective support systems. Finally, a set of recommendations is provided that will help to keep the doors open for those still wishing to enter. Educators at all levels, graduate students studying higher education, and interested readers in the general public will all find this book an invaluable resource.
