Why do many sources say the 1956 World Series was the last Subway Series of the 20th century?
2000 was also a Subway Series year. 2000 was also the last year of the 20th century.
Year 0? what the..
1 BC and then count 1 AD
so 100 AD counts 100 years after christ.
So 2000 is the last year of the 20th century.
This is so easy and yet so many people get it wrong, we went through a whole year at 0?
The reason why its not listed as the last subway series is people think 2000 was the first year of the next century, and that is just plain wrong.

Behind the Camera: Texts by Mark Haworth-Booth and David Alan Mellor $30 Universally acknowledged as the greatest British photographer and one of the great masters of all twentieth-century photography, Bill Brandt left an indelible mark on the medium during a career that spanned more than fifty years. Trained in the Paris studio of Man Ray, Brandt returned to England and produced a body of work that ranged from insightful portraits of English upper-crust society to views of the gritty poverty of the industrial north. During the Blitz of World War II, Brandt created an epic picture of blacked-out London, with images of bomb-damaged landmarks such as Saint Paul’s Cathedral and residents sheltering in underground subway stations. After the war, he began a series of ninety remarkable nude studies using lens distortions and unusual points of view to interpret the female form in new and exciting ways. At the same time, he photographed the movers and shakers of the English artistic scene, making portraits of everyone from Alec Guinness to David Hockney, and he toured the island nation tracking down landscapes that had been influential to important British writers for a historic series called Literary Britain. |

Invisible Frontier $14.95 In Invisible Frontier, the men of Jinx take readers on an adventure through New York–both a series of gripping true adventure stories and a fascinating trip through seldom-chronicled aspects of a great city’s history, technology, and culture. From The Publisher:In the shadows of the city waits an invisible frontier-a wilderness thriving in the deep places, woven through dead storm drains and live subway tunnels, coursing over third rails. This frontier waits in the walls of abandoned tenements, hides on the rooftops, infiltrates the bridges’ steel. It’s a no-man’s-land, fenced off with razor wire, marked by warning signs, persisting in shadow, hidden everywhere as a parallel dimension. Crowds hurry through the bright streets, insulated by pavement, never reflecting that beneath their feet or above their heads lurks a universe.Led by its two founding agents, L. B. Deyo and David Lefty Leibowitz, Jinx is a stylish urban adventure outlet known for its daring-if sometimes ridiculous-forays into the hidden wonders that lurk above and beneath America’s greatest city, New York. In Invisible Frontier L. B. and Lefty chronicle Jinx’s dramatic-if sometimes absurd-exploration of a Dante-esque New York, from the depths of the city’s underground Hell (abandoned aqueducts and subway tunnels) to the pinnacles of its Paradise (rooftops and bridges) and everything in between, capturing the genius of the city’s engineering, the vibrancy of its found art, and the elegiac beauty of its ruins. Here is a true series of wittily narrated adventures into the hidden world beneath a great civilization.About The Author:L. B. Deyo and David Lefty Leibowitz are the founders of Jinx: The Magazine of Global Urban Adventure. They live in New York City. |

Many Are Called $224.6 Between 1936 and 1941 Walker Evans and James Agee collaborated on one of the most provocative books in American literature, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941). While at work on this book, the two also conceived another less well-known but equally important book project entitled Many Are Called. This three-year photographic study of subway passengers made with a hidden camera was first published in 1966, with an introduction written by Agee in 1940. Long out of print, Many Are Called is now being reissued with a new foreword and afterword and with exquisitely reproduced images from newly prepared digital scans. Many Are Called came to fruition at a slow pace. In 1938, Walker Evans began surreptitiously photographing people on the New York City subway. With his camera hidden in his coat–the lens peeking through a buttonhole–he captured the faces of riders hurtling through the dark tunnels, wrapped in their own private thoughts. By 1940-41, Evans had made over six hundred photographs and had begun to edit the series. The book remained unpublished until 1966 when The Museum of Modern Art mounted an exhibition of Evans’s subway portraits. This beautiful new edition–published in the centenary year of the NYC subway–is an essential book for all admirers of Evans’s unparalleled photographs, Agee’s elegant prose, and the great City of New York. |

Sleeping Late On Judgment Day $15 My heart is bursting with homage as I / head off to a hostile eternity, writes Jane Mayhall, now eighty-five, who wrote most of these poems in an urgent outpouring over the last few years. From the decades-outdated subway token in the bottom of her shoulder bag, which calls forth earlier days in New York City, to the violin her father practiced among the pantry’s jam jars in her Kentucky childhood, Mayhall plucks small treasures that bespeak her fierce devotion to life, with its clutter of memories and imperfections. In her tightly knotted, beautifully turned short poems, she elegizes a world not quite gone, and brings us into contact with some of her contemporaries, from Lincoln Kirstein to Theodore Roethke. Chief among her cherished memories is her long bohemian marriage, which she recalls in a series of ravishing love poems to her late husband. In lines saturated with feeling she describes how she accommodates her grief at losing him and, as throughout this exquisite volume, how we must continue to greet life, in all its gorgeous strangeness. From the Hardcover edition. |

Stanley Kubrick Drama & Shadows $75 From the Publisher: Born in New York City in 1928, Stanley Kubrick began taking photographs when in high school. At sixteen, he sent a photograph he took of a newsstand after President Roosevelt s death to Look Magazine. The publication of the photograph marked the beginning of Kubrick s work for the magazine, which lasted until 1950, when Kubrick made his first 16mm documentary film. During those five years Kubrick completed dozens of photographic reportage assignments in New York City as well as abroad. The resulting thousands of negatives have remained in the archives of Look Magazine ever since. Kubrick s photographs vary in subject, but people are the central focus of attention, as is his commitment to narration. Whether capturing the meditative state of passengers in a series of portraits made in the New York subway, following famous boxer Rocky Graziano on the ring and in intimate moments, portraying the coming of age of socialite Betsy Von F rstenberg, or narrating the tale of a shoe-shine boy in the streets of New York City, Kubrick draws psychological portraits that combine drama, irony, and often mystery, anticipating his trademark cinematic style. If Kubrick s photographs are fascinating accounts of life in the late 1940s, they are also a major contribution to American photography of that era. At nineteen, Kubrick already had an immense talent in constructing complex compositions in which camera positioning and lighting played a crucial role. The book is introduced by an essay by Rainer Crone, who also edited the selection of photographs for this book. Crone is an expert on Kubrick s photographic work, and has already published a catalogue on this subject (see Related Titles below). An art historian, he gives context and examines Kubrick s photographs in relation to not only his later films but also the history of twentieth-century art and photography. Crone also wrote short introductions to most stories in the book. P |

The Disappointment Artist $14 In a volume he describes as a series of covert and no-so-covert autobiographical pieces, Jonathan Lethem explores the nature of cultural obsession–in his case, with examples as diverse as western films, comic books, the music of Talking Heads and Pink Floyd, and the New York City subway. Along the way, he shows how each of these voyages out from himself have led him home–home to his father’s life as a painter, and to the source of his beginnings as a writer. THE DISAPPOINTMENT ARTIST is a series of windows onto the collisions of art, landscape, and personal history that formed Lethem’s richly imaginative, searingly honest perspective on life as a human creature in the jungle of culture at the end of the twentieth century. From a confession of the sadness of a Star Wars nerd to an investigation into the legacy of a would-be literary titan, Lethem illuminates the process by which a child invents himself as a writer, and as a human being, through a series of approaches to the culture around him. In The Disappointment Artist, a letter from his aunt, a children’s book author, spurs a meditation on the value of writing workshops, and the uncomfortable fraternity of writers. In Defending The Searchers Lethem explains how a passion for the classic John Wayne Western became occasion for a series of minor humiliations. In Identifying with Your Parents, an excavation of childhood love for superhero comics expands to cover a whole range of nostalgia for a previous generation’s cultural artifacts. And 13/1977/21, which begins by recounting the summer he saw Star Wars twenty-one times, slipping past ushers who’d begun to recognize me . . . occult as a porn customer, becomesa meditation on the sorrow and solace of the solitary movie-goer. THE DISAPPOINTMENT ARTIST confirms Lethem’s unique ability to illuminate the way life, his and ours, can be read between the lines of art and culture. |

Tokyo $16.95 Tokyo seems like an ultra modern–even postmodern–city, with its inventive skyscrapers and digitized surfaces. But it is also a city where past, present, and future coexist–where backstreets both inspire science fiction and host wooden temples, fox shrines, and Buddhist statues that evoke past ages. In this addition to Oxford’’s Cityscapes series, Stephen Mansfield explores a city rich in diversity, tracing its evolution from the founding of its massive stone citadel, when it was known as Edo, through the rise of a merchant class who transformed the town into a center for art, to the emergence of modern Tokyo. Mansfield traces a city of print masters, Kabuki theater, novelists and great architecture, which has overcome many disasters, from the 1923 earthquake through the fire-bombings of World War II to the 1995 subway gas attacks. |
